Meaning and types. Bio-diversity, short for biological diversity, refers to the enormous variety of living organisms found on the earth and the variability among them. It is usually described at three levels: species diversity, meaning the variety of different plant, animal and micro-organism species; genetic diversity, meaning the variety of genes within a single species; and ecosystem diversity, meaning the variety of habitats and ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, deserts and oceans.
