Project Tiger, launched in 1973, is India's flagship programme to save the tiger from extinction by creating protected tiger reserves, conserving their habitat and maintaining healthy tiger populations, which in turn protects whole ecosystems and bio-diversity. Meaning and purpose: Project Tiger is a wildlife-conservation programme started by the Government of India in 1973 in response to the sharp fall in the number of tigers in the country. Its aims are:

  1. To protect the tiger, an endangered species, from extinction.
  2. To conserve the natural habitat of tigers by setting up specially protected areas called tiger reserves.
  3. To maintain a healthy and viable population of tigers in their natural surroundings.
