India's States were not created all at once — most were reorganised on a linguistic basis after 1956, with several later States carved out for separate linguistic, tribal, or administrative reasons right up to 2014.

When India became independent in 1947, it had a patchwork of British-administered provinces and princely states that were joined together into the newly independent Indian union. The States as we know them today emerged mainly through the recommendations of the States Reorganisation Commission, set up in December 1953, which proposed the creation of States mainly on linguistic lines. This led to the major reorganisation of States in 1956, which laid the basis for most of today's linguistic States.

Since then, the process of creating new States has continued for different reasons. Gujarat and Maharashtra were created in 1960 by dividing the old bilingual Bombay State. Nagaland became a State in 1963. Punjab and Haryana were separated from each other in 1966, and Himachal Pradesh later became a full State in 1971. As the north-eastern region was reorganised, Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya became full States in 1972, Sikkim joined the Union as a State in 1975, and Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa became States in 1987. In 2000, three large States were further divided both to meet demands for separate statehood and for administrative efficiency: Chhattisgarh (from Madhya Pradesh), Uttarakhand (from Uttar Pradesh) and Jharkhand (from Bihar) were created. Most recently, in 2014, the State of Telangana was formed by dividing Andhra Pradesh. Some regions and linguistic groups, such as the demand for Vidarbha in Maharashtra, continue to seek separate statehood even today.

✓Final answer

A representative list of major State-formation dates: most States (1956, States Reorganisation) then Gujarat and Maharashtra (1960), Nagaland (1963), Haryana separated from Punjab (1966), Himachal Pradesh full statehood (1971), Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya (1972), Sikkim (1975), Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa (1987), Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand (2000), and Telangana (2014). For the exact year of every individual State (including those formed directly in 1956), this list should be completed and cross-checked using an official source such as the States Reorganisation Act records, as the activity itself asks students to research.
