Why do we Need an Independent Judiciary?
In any society, disputes are bound to arise — between individuals, between groups, and between individuals or groups on one side and the government on the other. All such disputes must be settled by a body that stands apart from the disputing parties, and settled in accordance with the principle of the rule of law.
Rule of law means that every individual — rich or poor, man or woman, belonging to a forward or a backward caste — is subject to the same law. No one is above it, and no one is denied its protection. The judiciary's principal role is to protect this rule of law and to ensure the supremacy of law over the will of any individual or group, however powerful. …
