Fitts described skill learning as passing through three qualitatively distinct phases — cognitive, associative, and autonomous — and learning to drive a car is a clear, familiar illustration of all three.

In the cognitive phase, a beginner driver has to consciously understand and memorise a large number of instructions and rules: how to operate the clutch and gears, when and how to check mirrors, how to interpret road signs and signals, and how each of these actions is supposed to be coordinated. Every external cue (a red light, another vehicle), every instructional demand from an instructor, and the outcome of each of the learner's own actions (stalling the engine, braking too hard) has to be actively and effortfully kept in conscious awareness — this is why early driving lessons feel mentally exhausting and require intense concentration even for very short distances.

In the associative phase, as practice continues, different sensory inputs — the sight of a turn approaching, the sound of the engine, the feel of the clutch biting — become linked with the correct responses more directly. Errors such as stalling or missing gear changes decrease, overall performance smooths out, and less time is needed to execute manoeuvres correctly. However, the driver in this phase still has to remain attentive to sensory inputs and stay concentrated on the driving task throughout — they generally cannot yet hold a complex conversation or think about unrelated matters while driving without their performance suffering. …
