Verbal learning, being unique to human beings because it depends on language, is studied through three main experimental procedures, each investigating a different aspect of how verbal material is learned.

The first is paired-associates learning, in which a list of paired items is prepared (for instance, to study how foreign-language equivalents of familiar words are learned), with the first word in each pair serving as the stimulus and the second as the response. The learner is first shown the complete pairs together, and then, across learning trials, is shown only the stimulus term and must produce the correct response, being shown the correct answer if they fail. The number of trials needed to reach a criterion of producing every response correctly in a single trial is the standard measure of learning.

The second is serial learning, in which a list of verbal items (nonsense syllables or words) must be reproduced in the exact order presented. The typical technique, the serial anticipation method, presents one item at a time and requires the learner to anticipate (produce) the next item before it is shown; each correctly or incorrectly anticipated item becomes, in turn, the stimulus for anticipating the following item, and trials continue until the whole ordered list can be reproduced without error. …
