Because individuals frequently do not know how to behave in a new situation, they observe others and emulate their behaviour — a process called modeling.
Bandura's well-known 'Bobo doll' experiment illustrates the mechanism clearly. Children watched a film in which an adult model behaved aggressively toward a doll, and the film had three versions: the model being rewarded for the aggression, the model being punished for it, or no consequence shown at all. Children who saw the model rewarded were subsequently the most aggressive themselves, while those who saw the model punished were the least aggressive. This shows that observers acquire knowledge of a behaviour simply by watching a model perform it, but they are more likely to actually display (perform) that behaviour if the model was seen to be rewarded for it. …
