Part (a): the South-Western Plateau belt (Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala) is rich in ferrous minerals (iron ore, manganese) and bauxite in Dharwar rocks, with Kerala's monazite/thorium, but is poor in coal.

Part (b): the North-Western belt along the Aravalis (Rajasthan, Gujarat) is rich in non-ferrous metals (copper, zinc), building stones, gypsum, Fuller's earth and petroleum.

Minerals in India are unevenly distributed and tend to be concentrated in distinct mineral belts shaped by the geological history of each region.

Part (a)

The South-Western Plateau Region mineral belt has the following characteristics:

  1. Geographical extent — it spreads across Karnataka and Goa and the adjoining uplands of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, covering the southern Deccan and the Western Ghats margin.
  2. Dominance of ferrous minerals — it is especially rich in high-grade iron ore (Kudremukh and the Bellary-Chitradurga-Chikmagalur-Tumkur belt in Karnataka, and Goa) and manganese.
  3. Other minerals — it also holds bauxite, limestone and clay; Kerala's coastal sands yield strategic monazite and thorium, and Goa is a leading iron-ore exporter.
  4. Geological association — the minerals occur in the ancient crystalline and metamorphic rocks of the Dharwar and Cuddapah systems of the Peninsular Shield. …
