This map-identification question tests knowledge of major world geographical features: countries, agricultural regions, transport nodes, and strategic canals across Africa, South America, Asia, and Oceania.

Map-based questions in geography demand that you connect factual knowledge—political boundaries, economic zones, infrastructure—with spatial reasoning. The seven features marked span continents and themes: political extent (largest countries), economic activity (commercial grain farming), and global connectivity (ports, canals, airports, railways). Each clue points to a landmark or region that plays a defining role in its continent's geography or the world economy.

A. The largest country in Africa

By area, Algeria holds this distinction at approximately 2.38 million square kilometres, covering much of the Maghreb and extending deep into the Sahara. Since South Sudan's independence in 2011, Algeria overtook Sudan as the continent's largest state. Its vast interior is sparsely populated desert, while the northern coastal strip concentrates population and economic activity.

B. An area of extensive commercial grain farming

The clue points to a region where large-scale, mechanised cultivation of cereals for export dominates. In Argentina, the Pampas—a temperate grassland stretching across Buenos Aires, La Pampa, and Santa Fe provinces—is the heartland of wheat and maize production. Flat terrain, fertile soil, and a humid subtropical to temperate climate make it one of the world's great breadbaskets, feeding both domestic and international markets.

C. A major seaport

Without the map, several candidates exist depending on the marked location. In Japan, Yokohama (near Tokyo) and Kobe (near Osaka) rank among the busiest container and cargo ports in Asia. Both serve as gateways for Japan's manufacturing exports and raw-material imports, underpinning the country's trade-dependent economy.

D. A shipping canal

Two canals dominate global maritime geography. The Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across Central America, cutting weeks off the voyage around Cape Horn. The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, providing the shortest sea route between Europe and Asia. The visually impaired alternative mentions both: question 29.4 specifies the Panama Canal (Atlantic–Pacific), while 29.6 specifies the Suez Canal (Red Sea–Mediterranean). The map marker determines which is correct.

Note

The Panama Canal, completed in 1914, revolutionised shipping by eliminating the need to round South America. The Suez Canal, opened in 1869, similarly transformed trade between Europe and the Indian Ocean.

E. An international airport

In New Zealand, Auckland International Airport is the principal gateway, handling the majority of international passenger and freight traffic. Located on the North Island, it connects New Zealand to Australia, Asia, the Pacific, and beyond.

F. The westernmost station of the Australian Trans-Continental Railway …
