The Vijayanagara Empire was founded in 1336 by two brothers, Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, who were originally feudatories of the Kakatiya dynasty and later established the Sangama dynasty.

The founding of the Vijayanagara Empire is a classic example of how political vacuum and cultural resistance can give rise to a new power. In the early 14th century, the Deccan region was reeling from the destructive invasions of the Delhi Sultanate under Alauddin Khalji and Muhammad bin Tughlaq. The old Hindu kingdoms — the Hoysalas, Kakatiyas, and Yadavas — had been crushed. Into this chaos stepped two brothers, Harihara and Bukka, who had served as administrators under the Kakatiya ruler of Warangal. Captured and taken to Delhi, they converted to Islam, but were later sent back to the south as governors. They soon renounced Islam, reclaimed their Hindu faith under the guidance of the sage Vidyaranya, and declared independence. By 1336, they had established their capital at Vijayanagara (the "City of Victory") on the banks of the Tungabhadra River.

  1. Identify the founders from tradition and epigraphy.

The traditional account, recorded in texts like the Vidyaranya Kalajnana and later chronicles, names Harihara and Bukka as the founders. Epigraphic evidence — most notably the Vidyaranya inscription and the Sanskrit inscription of Bukka I — confirms that these two brothers, sons of Sangama, were the first rulers of the Sangama dynasty. The empire's foundation is dated to 1336 CE.

  2. Understand the political context.

The brothers were originally feudatories of the Kakatiya kingdom. After the Kakatiya capital Warangal fell to the Delhi Sultanate in 1323, Harihara and Bukka were taken prisoner. They were later appointed as governors of the Kampili region (in present-day Karnataka) by Muhammad bin Tughlaq. Their rebellion and establishment of an independent kingdom marked the beginning of Vijayanagara's rise.

  3. Note the role of the sage Vidyaranya. …
