Historians treat the Mahabharata not as a single book by one author but as a layered composition, and this is precisely why they call it complex.
First, its language and authorship are layered. Though tradition ascribes it to the sage Vyasa, scholars distinguish at least three stages: the original Jaya ("Victory", about 8,800 verses), an early bardic tale of a Kuru conflict; the expanded Bharata of about 24,000 verses; and the final Mahabharata of nearly 100,000 verses. The main story was probably composed by sutas (charioteer-bards), while Brahmanas later added genealogies, cosmology and long didactic sections such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Shanti Parva and the Anushasana Parva.
Second, the text survives in many manuscripts and regional versions in different scripts. To handle this, a team at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune, led by V. S. Sukthankar, undertook a monumental project from 1919 to 1966 to prepare a Critical Edition. By comparing verses common to manuscripts from across the subcontinent they reconstructed a core text and recorded thousands of variations and interpolations in the footnotes — themselves running to several volumes. …
