François Bernier was a French physician and traveller who spent nearly twelve years in India (1656–1668), much of it in the Mughal court as the personal physician to Danishmand Khan, a nobleman under Emperor Aurangzeb. It took the form of a series of letters addressed to his patrons in France, including Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the finance minister of Louis XIV. Bernier's writing was not merely a travelogue; it was an analytical comparison. He constantly measured what he saw in India against the political, economic, and social structures of Europe, particularly France.

His central argument revolved around land ownership. Bernier believed that in the Mughal Empire, the emperor owned all the land, and this "crown ownership" was fundamentally different from the private property systems of Europe. He argued that this system discouraged long-term investment, led to the exploitation of peasants, and caused economic stagnation.
