Why the British built hill stations

The colonial administration faced a practical problem: India's summer heat was debilitating for European officials unaccustomed to tropical climates. Hill stations emerged as a solution—elevated settlements in the Himalayas and other mountain ranges where temperatures remained moderate year-round. These weren't merely holiday resorts. They served strategic purposes: sanatoriums for recuperating soldiers, command centres during the hot months, and spaces where the British could recreate a semblance of English life with gardens, churches, and social clubs.

Shimla became the summer capital of British India, but the network extended far beyond. Each hill station reflected specific colonial needs—military positioning, tea cultivation oversight, or proximity to restive frontier regions.

  1. Darjeeling (West Bengal)

    Established in the 1830s after the British acquired the land from the Kingdom of Sikkim, Darjeeling sat at a strategic location near the borders of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. The climate proved ideal for tea plantations, and the town became the centre of India's tea industry. Militarily, it allowed surveillance of the eastern Himalayan frontier. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (the "Toy Train," built 1879–1881) connected it to the plains, cementing its role as both a commercial hub and a retreat for officials from Calcutta.
