Part (a)

A central plank of Nehru's foreign policy was solidarity among the newly independent nations of Asia and Africa, so that they could stand together against colonialism and remain outside the Cold War blocs.

  • Asian Relations Conference, 1947. Even before independence was formally complete, Nehru convened this conference in New Delhi to bring Asian leaders together and foster a sense of shared identity and cooperation.
  • Championing decolonisation. Nehru was a consistent and vocal supporter of anti-colonial struggles across Asia and Africa. India strongly backed Indonesia's freedom against the Dutch and hosted an international conference on Indonesia in 1949, and supported liberation movements in Africa.
  • Bandung Conference, 1955. Nehru, along with leaders like Nasser of Egypt, Sukarno of Indonesia and Tito of Yugoslavia, was a driving force behind the Afro-Asian Conference at Bandung. It became the foundation of the Non-Aligned Movement (formally launched at Belgrade in 1961). …
