Pakistan has experienced several periods of military rule, with four prominent military rulers being General Ayub Khan, General Yahya Khan, General Zia-ul-Haq, and General Pervez Musharraf.

Military rule has been a recurring feature in Pakistan’s political history, often justified by the army as necessary to restore order or correct civilian mismanagement. These rulers typically seized power through coups, dissolved democratic institutions, and governed under martial law. Their tenures left deep marks on the country’s political culture, foreign policy, and social fabric.

General Ayub Khan was the first military ruler of Pakistan. He took power in 1958 after a coup against President Iskander Mirza, who had himself abrogated the constitution. Ayub Khan ruled until 1969, introducing a system of “Basic Democracies” and pursuing economic modernisation, but his regime also saw growing regional discontent, especially in East Pakistan, and ended with widespread protests.

General Yahya Khan succeeded Ayub Khan in 1969 and oversaw Pakistan’s first general elections in 1970. However, his refusal to hand over power to the winning party, the Awami League, led to a brutal military crackdown in East Pakistan, the Bangladesh Liberation War, and Pakistan’s defeat in the 1971 war with India. Yahya Khan resigned after the war, leaving a shattered nation.

General Zia-ul-Haq came to power in 1977 through a coup against Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He ruled for over eleven years, until his death in a plane crash in 1988. Zia’s regime was marked by the Islamisation of laws and society, support for the Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet-Afghan war, and the execution of Bhutto.
