Part (a): 1988-1993 saw the rise of the Janata Dal/National Front and end of Congress dominance, Mandal implementation, the Ayodhya movement and Babri Masjid demolition (1992), and Rajiv Gandhi's assassination with 1991 liberalisation.

Part (b): The coalition era (1989-2004) ended one-party dominance, empowered regional parties, brought instability and frequent elections, forced consensus-based governance, and widened social and regional representation.

Part (a)

The years 1988 to 1993 were a turning point that closed the era of Congress dominance and opened the age of coalitions, caste assertion and religious mobilisation. Four developments stand out.

Formation of the Janata Dal and the National Front. In 1988 several opposition parties came together to form the Janata Dal, which built the National Front. In the 1989 election the Congress lost its majority, and the National Front government under V. P. Singh took office with outside support from the BJP and the Left Front—an arrangement that marked the practical beginning of coalition politics at the Centre.

Implementation of the Mandal Commission report. In 1990 the V. P. Singh government decided to implement the Mandal Commission's recommendation of 27 percent reservation in central government jobs for Other Backward Classes. This produced the intense anti-Mandal agitation in northern India and permanently strengthened caste as an axis of national politics.

The Ayodhya movement and the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Alongside Mandal ran the "Mandir" mobilisation. The BJP's Rath Yatra and the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign culminated in the demolition of the Babri Masjid on 6 December 1992, followed by widespread communal violence.
