  1. The type approach has categorised personality since ancient times — Hippocrates' humours, the Ayurvedic tridosha and trigunas, Sheldon's body types, Jung's introvert–extrovert, and Friedman & Rosenman's Type A/B (C/D).

Part (a)

The type approach attempts to comprehend human personality by examining certain broad patterns in observed behavioural characteristics and sorting people into a limited number of distinct types. Such attempts are very old:

  • Hippocrates (Greek) proposed a typology based on body fluids or humours, yielding four temperaments — sanguine (blood), phlegmatic (phlegm), melancholic (black bile) and choleric (yellow bile).
  • The Indian Charak Samhita (Ayurveda) classified people according to three humoral elements or doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — each linked to particular temperamental qualities.
  • Indian tradition also used the trigunas — Sattva (purity, wisdom), Rajas (activity, passion) and Tamas (dullness, inertia) — to describe personality dispositions.
  • William Sheldon typed people by body build and temperament into endomorphic (fat, soft, round — relaxed, sociable), mesomorphic (strong, muscular — energetic, assertive) and ectomorphic (thin, long — restrained, private).
  • Carl Jung offered an influential typology of introverts (inward-looking, reserved) and extroverts (outgoing, sociable).
  • In recent years, Friedman and Rosenman distinguished Type A (competitive, hurried, prone to heart disease) from Type B personalities, and researchers later added Type C (cooperative, suppresses emotion) and Type D (distressed) personalities. …
