Question

Q.Suman wanted to purchase a sandwich toaster. She checked about the various sandwich toasters available online and compared the prices so that an intelligent and wise choice could be made. Then she went to a nearby market to buy the sandwich toaster. Being an informed consumer, she looked for the correct standardisation mark. The shopkeeper showed her different toasters but was quoting a higher price than the price she had checked online. After negotiating with the shopkeeper, she was able to bring the price down. As a responsible consumer, she asked for a cash memo, against the amount paid for the product and took the toaster home. On opening the package, she found an instruction booklet, which she read carefully. Then she followed all instructions step-by-step and made nicely toasted paneer sandwiches for her family.

(a) State any two responsibilities, which have been discharged by Suman, besides asking for a cash memo.
(b) Explain the two rights being discussed in the above case.

Suman’s story shows how a responsible consumer uses rights like the right to information and the right to choose, while also fulfilling duties such as comparing products and reading instructions.

Let’s step into Suman’s shoes for a moment. She didn’t just walk into a shop and buy the first sandwich toaster she saw. She did her homework — checked online, compared prices, looked for the standardisation mark, negotiated, and even asked for a cash memo. That’s the mark of an informed consumer, and it’s exactly the kind of behaviour the Consumer Protection Act encourages. In the CBSE Class 12 Business Studies chapter on Consumer Protection, we study both the rights a consumer enjoys and the responsibilities a consumer must carry — and Suman’s actions illustrate both beautifully.

  1. Two responsibilities discharged by Suman, besides asking for a cash memo The first responsibility is comparing products and prices before buying. Suman checked various sandwich toasters online and compared their prices. This is a key consumer duty — you don’t just buy on impulse. You gather information, weigh options, and make a wise choice. It protects you from being overcharged or sold a poor-quality product. The second responsibility is reading the instruction booklet carefully and following it step-by-step. After bringing the toaster home, Suman didn’t just plug it in and hope for the best. She read the booklet, understood the safety and usage guidelines, and then used the product correctly. This ensures the product lasts longer, works safely, and gives the expected results — in her case, perfectly toasted paneer sandwiches.
    Note

A responsible consumer has several duties: being aware of one’s rights, checking for quality/standardisation marks (like ISI or Agmark), asking for a cash memo, and using products as per the instructions. Suman did all of these.

  2. The two rights being discussed in the above case The first right is the Right to Information. Suman used this right when she checked online about the various sandwich toasters and compared their prices. She also looked for the correct standardisation mark (like ISI) on the product. The Right to Information means a consumer has the right to know all relevant details about a product — its price, quality, ingredients, expiry date, and so on — before making a purchase. This right helps you avoid being misled or cheated. …
