The Champaran episode taught the peasants courage by showing them they could defy unjust British authority without violence, and self-reliance by proving that their own collective, non-violent action could secure justice.

Mahatma Gandhi's 1917 intervention in Champaran was decisive for the peasants' courage and self-reliance. They had long been exploited by the British planters under the oppressive tinkathia system, forced to grow indigo on three-twentieths of their land and surrender the harvest as rent, and then made to pay compensation when synthetic indigo destroyed the crop's value. Years of this had left them helpless and fear-stricken before the landlords.

When Gandhi arrived to investigate and the authorities ordered him to leave, he refused, declaring his duty to the suffering peasants. His summons to court brought thousands of peasants pouring into Motihari in a spontaneous demonstration around the courthouse — what Fischer calls the beginning of their liberation from fear of the British. Seeing the officials baffled and powerless taught the peasants a profound lesson in courage: the might they had always dreaded could be challenged.
