The lesson is titled 'Indigo' because the indigo crop was the exact cause of the Champaran peasants' exploitation under the British planters and, in turn, the focus of their struggle for justice in Gandhi's first satyagraha in India.

The title 'Indigo' is not merely the name of a plant or a colour; it names the crop at the very centre of the peasants' suffering and their eventual struggle. To see why the chapter carries this name, one must understand what indigo meant to the British planters and to the Indian tenants who were forced to grow it in Champaran.

Indigo was the chief commercial crop of the Champaran estates, valued for the blue dye it produced. Under the long-term tinkathia contract, the British landlords compelled every tenant to plant three-twentieths — fifteen per cent — of his holding with indigo and to surrender the entire harvest as rent, giving the peasant nothing in return.
