The first quality that strikes us is his patience and thoroughness. Gandhi does not rush. When Rajkumar Shukla first approaches him at Lucknow, Gandhi does not head straight to Champaran; he first goes to Muzzafarpur to gather fuller information, and once in Champaran he records depositions from about ten thousand peasants, building an irrefutable factual foundation before pressing his case.
His moral courage reveals itself quietly. Served with an official notice to leave Champaran, Gandhi does not shout defiance; he signs the receipt, writes that he will disobey, and in court pleads guilty, explaining his 'conflict of duties' and asking for the penalty. The British officials, used to compliance or violent rebellion, are baffled by such calm resistance.
