Franz moves from a carefree, reluctant student to a regretful, awakened boy who finally understands the true value of learning and his mother tongue.

The story opens with Franz dreading school, more interested in the bright day and the crowd around the bulletin board than in his French lesson. He is a typical playful boy, tempted to skip class and terrified of M. Hamel’s “terrible” grammar rules. His only concern is avoiding punishment for not knowing his participles.

Everything changes when he learns this is the last lesson in French. The same classroom, the same teacher, and the same grammar suddenly feel precious. Franz is flooded with regret — regret for wasting time, for not valuing his lessons, and for taking his language for granted. He now listens with painful attention, understanding that what he once saw as a burden was actually a treasure.
