M. Hamel is a devoted teacher of forty years, a quiet patriot who prizes the French language, and a humane man whose feeling overcomes him at his final lesson.

Devotion to his profession. M. Hamel has given "forty years of faithful service" to the same little school, his garden outside the window and his class before him. On this last day he honours his work like a ceremony: he wears his "beautiful green coat, his frilled shirt, and the little black silk cap, all embroidered," which he never wore except on inspection and prize days. He hears every lesson to the very last and teaches with such patience that even Franz is amazed how easily he now understands — it is "as if the poor man wanted to give us all he knew before going away."

Patriotism. His love of country runs deep but never turns to noise. He praises French as "the most beautiful language in the world — the clearest, the most logical," and tells his pupils they must guard it, because when a people are enslaved, "as long as they hold fast to their language it is as if they had the key to their prison." …
