Article Writing

An article is a piece of writing for a newspaper or magazine that discusses a topic, presents a viewpoint, and informs or persuades the reader. It carries about 5 marks, word limit 120-150 words. It is written in a semi-formal style and must read as a developed opinion, not a list.

When it is used: topics such as the value of discipline, dangers of social media, women's safety, importance of sports, environmental concerns, or the impact of technology on students.

Exact format

TITLE (catchy, centred)
by <Name> (by-line)
Para 1 - Introduction: hook + what the article is about.
Para 2 - Body: causes, effects, examples, arguments (can be 1-2 paras).
Para 3 - Conclusion: summing up + a suggestion or call to action.

An article has no date, no salutation, no address - only a title and a by-line. Use a clear thesis, connect paragraphs with linkers (moreover, however, consequently), and support claims with reasons or examples.

CBSE marking scheme (5 marks)

  • Format - 1 mark: title + by-line (and clear paragraphing).
  • Content - 2 marks: relevant ideas, logically organised, with examples.
  • Expression - 2 marks: accuracy (1) + fluency and coherence (1).
