Notice Writing

A notice is a short, formal announcement put up on a notice board to inform a specific group of people (students, staff, members) about an event, meeting, loss, or instruction. In the exam it usually carries 4 marks and a limit of about 50 words (the box counts only the body, not the heading or name).

When it is used: announcing an inter-house competition, a lost-and-found item, a club meeting, a trip, an exhibition, or a change in timings.

Exact format expected

NAME OF ISSUING BODY / SCHOOL
NOTICE (centred, capitals)
Date: ___________
HEADING / SUBJECT (bold, tells the purpose)
Body: What, When, Where, Who, Why, + action required.
                                   (signature)
Name
Designation (e.g. Head Boy / Secretary)

Put the whole notice inside a box. Use the third person and a formal, impersonal tone - never "I am happy to..." but "All students are informed that...".

CBSE marking scheme (4 marks)

  • Format - 1 mark: name of institution, the word NOTICE, date, heading, and writer's name + designation all present.
  • Content - 2 marks: the 5 W's answered clearly.
  • Expression - 1 mark: grammatical accuracy and appropriate formal style.
