In Hibiscus, the pollen tube enters the embryo sac through the micropyle at the micropylar end of the ovule (porogamy). One male nucleus fuses with the egg (syngamy), and the other fuses with the two polar nuclei (triple fusion).

The question asks about two events in angiosperm fertilisation: the route by which the pollen tube reaches the embryo sac, and what happens to the two male gametes it delivers. Together these describe double fertilisation, a feature unique to flowering plants.

Entry of the pollen tube

After a pollen grain germinates on the stigma of Hibiscus, it sends out a pollen tube that grows down through the style, guided by chemical cues from the ovule, to reach the embryo sac (the female gametophyte inside the ovule).

The ovule bears a small opening, the micropyle, at its free end — the micropylar end — which lies opposite the chalazal (attachment) end. In Hibiscus and the great majority of angiosperms the pollen tube enters the embryo sac by growing in through this micropyle. This mode of entry is called porogamy. The tube passes through the micropyle and enters the embryo sac near the egg apparatus, which is itself located at the micropylar end.

Note

Two rarer routes exist: chalazogamy (entry through the chalazal end) and mesogamy (through the integuments). Hibiscus follows the usual porogamous route — in through the micropyle at the micropylar end.

Fate of the male nuclei

The pollen tube carries two male gametes. On entering the embryo sac the tube ruptures and releases them near the egg apparatus, where they take part in double fertilisation: …
