Question

Q.Study the figures given below that depict the comparative age distribution of human populations in Sweden and Rwanda. (International Data Base 2003) and answer the questions that follow : [Figure: Two age-pyramids plotted as Percent of population (Males on left, Females on right) vs Age (years) from 0-4 to 85+ — Sweden, roughly uniform width from base to apex; Rwanda, very broad base tapering to a narrow apex]

(a) What can be inferred from the very broad base of Rwanda's age pyramid ? Support your answer with the data provided in the figure.
(b) Sweden has an age distribution that is approximately of the same width near its base as at the apex. What does this indicate ?
(c) Name the type of age pyramid shown above for Sweden.

Part (a): Rwanda's broad base = high birth rate and rapid growth; Sweden's uniform width = low balanced birth/death rates and a stable, ageing population; Sweden's pyramid is the stable (stationary, bell-shaped) type.

Part (c): Rwanda's pyramid is the expanding (triangular) type.

An age pyramid is a snapshot of a population's structure, plotting each age group against its share of the population, split by sex. A broad base means many children (high birth rate); a narrow apex means few elderly; a uniform width means births roughly balance deaths and people survive to old age.

Part (a)

  1. What Rwanda's broad base tells us. The youngest age groups form a very large fraction of the total, so the base is extremely wide and the pyramid narrows steeply toward the top. This indicates a high birth rate and high fertility, a young population, and rapid growth, because far more people are being added by births than removed by deaths. The sharp taper also shows higher mortality and lower life expectancy than in a developed country.
  2. What Sweden's uniform width indicates. Sweden's bars are of similar width from the base almost to the top, narrowing only at the very oldest groups. This means the birth rate is low (narrow base) and the death rate is low with high life expectancy (people survive to old age, keeping the upper bars wide). The population is therefore stable or very slow-growing and ageing, with births roughly balancing deaths. …
