Q.Distinguish between Kharif and Rabi crops, giving one example of each.
Kharif crops are sown at the start of the south-west monsoon, around June, and harvested by around September-October; because they are sown during the rainy season, they generally need warm, wet growing conditions. Rice, cotton, groundnut, bajra, and maize are typical Kharif crops.
Rabi crops, by contrast, are sown after the monsoon has withdrawn, roughly October-November, and harvested in the following spring, around February-March; they generally need cooler growing conditions and depend more on irrigation or residual soil moisture than on direct monsoon rainfall. Wheat, gram (chana), mustard, and barley are typical Rabi crops.
Kharif crops (e.g., rice, cotton) are sown with the monsoon (June) and harvested in autumn; Rabi crops (e.g., wheat, mustard) are sown after the monsoon withdraws (October-November) and harvested in spring (February-March).
