The Green Revolution refers to the period, beginning in the mid-to-late 1960s, during which India achieved a sharp and rapid increase in foodgrain productivity, especially for wheat and later rice. It was made possible by a technology package that combined high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds -- bred to respond strongly to fertiliser and water -- with assured irrigation, increased and more balanced use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, greater mechanisation, and government price support (Minimum Support Price and procurement) that gave farmers a reliable market for the additional output.
