Question of 37

Q.Draw a circuit diagram to study characteristics of n-p-n transistor in CE configuration. Draw the sketch of input and output characteristics of this configuration. Define current amplification factor? [2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5] OR Draw the symbol of a p-n-p transistor. Show the biasing of a p-n-p transistor and explain the transistor action.

In CE configuration, a small base current controls a much larger collector current; the input characteristic plots IBI_B vs VBEV_{BE}, the output characteristic plots ICI_C vs VCEV_{CE}, and their ratio gives the current amplification factor β\beta.

Circuit (described): For an n-p-n transistor in common-emitter (CE) configuration, the emitter is common to both input and output loops. The input loop connects the base to the emitter through a battery VBBV_{BB} (forward-biasing the base-emitter junction) with a milliammeter to read IBI_B and a voltmeter to read VBEV_{BE}. The output loop connects the collector to the emitter through a battery VCCV_{CC} (reverse-biasing the base-collector junction) with a milliammeter to read ICI_C and a voltmeter to read VCEV_{CE}.

Input characteristics: a plot of base current IBI_B vs base-emitter voltage VBEV_{BE}, at a constant VCEV_{CE} — similar in shape to a forward-biased diode curve.
