Ecological succession is the orderly, predictable change of community composition over time toward a climax; hydrarch begins in water, xerarch begins on dry/bare land, and both move toward mesic conditions.

Ecological succession. It is the gradual and fairly predictable change in the species composition of a given area over time. The community that initiates the change is called the pioneer community, and the final stable community is the climax community. The whole sequence of communities is a sere, and each transitional community is a seral stage.

Difference between hydrarch and xerarch succession:

Hydrarch successionXerarch succession
Starts in a water body / aquatic area (e.g. pond, lake)Starts in a dry, bare area (e.g. bare rock, desert)
Successional series moves from hydric (watery) towards mesic (moderate moisture)Successional series moves from xeric (very dry) towards mesic
