Ecological succession = the gradual, sequential and predictable change in the species composition of an area until a stable climax community develops. Hydrarch succession starts in a water body (too wet) and xerarch succession starts in dry, barren land (too dry); both converge on a mesic (moderate/moist) climax.

Definition. Ecological succession is the orderly process by which the communities of an area change over time, one seral community replacing another, until a relatively stable climax community in equilibrium with the environment is reached. The whole sequence of communities is a sere, and each transitional community is a seral stage.

Two types of primary succession — the difference:

FeatureHydrarch successionXerarch succession
Where it startsIn a water body (pond, lake) — a very wet habitatOn a dry, bare area (bare rock, dunes) — a very dry habitat
Pioneer speciesPhytoplankton / small aquatic plantsLichens (which secrete acids to weather the rock)
Direction of changeFrom aquatic → toward land (loses water)From bare rock → toward soil (gains moisture)
