The phosphorus cycle is a sedimentary biogeochemical cycle whose reservoir is rock. Weathering releases phosphates into soil → absorbed by producers → transferred to consumers → returned by decomposers → some runs off to water and forms sediments/rock. There is no gaseous phase.

Concept. Phosphorus is a key nutrient (in nucleic acids, ATP, phospholipids, bones and shells). Its natural reservoir is rock, which contains phosphorus as phosphates.

Steps of the cycle (schematic — as drawn):

  1. Weathering of rocks releases phosphates into the soil solution.
  2. Producers (plants) absorb these soluble phosphates through their roots.
  3. Consumers (animals) obtain phosphorus by feeding on plants.
  4. Decomposers (bacteria and fungi) break down dead organisms and organic waste, releasing phosphates back into the soil, making them available again to plants. …
