Because the mother contributes only an X chromosome via the egg while the father can contribute either an X or a Y via the sperm, it is the sperm's chromosome content that fixes whether the zygote becomes XX (female) or XY (male).

Chromosomal basis of human sex determination

Humans show the XX-XY type of sex determination. A woman has two X chromosomes (46, XX) and is therefore homogametic — every egg (ovum) she produces carries a single X chromosome, because meiosis can only distribute one of her two X's to each egg. A man has one X and one Y chromosome (46, XY) and is heterogametic — during spermatogenesis, meiosis segregates the X and the Y chromosomes into different sperm, so a man produces two types of sperm in equal (50:50) proportion: X-bearing sperm and Y-bearing sperm.

Why the sperm decides the sex

At fertilisation, the egg (which is always X-bearing) fuses with one sperm, chosen essentially at random from the X-bearing and Y-bearing population:

  • If an X-bearing sperm fertilises the egg, the zygote is XX, and develops into a female child.
  • If a Y-bearing sperm fertilises the egg, the zygote is XY, and develops into a male child. …
