In male heterogamety the male is the heterogametic sex (XY); in female heterogamety the female is the heterogametic sex (ZW). Humans show male heterogamety; birds show female heterogamety.

Sex determination in many organisms depends on which sex produces two morphologically different kinds of gametes with respect to sex chromosomes (the heterogametic sex) versus which produces only one kind (the homogametic sex).

Male heterogamety: The male has two different sex chromosomes (X and Y) and therefore produces two types of sperm — 50% bearing an X chromosome and 50% bearing a Y chromosome — while the female (XX) produces only one type of egg (bearing X). The sex of the offspring is thus determined by which type of sperm fertilises the egg. Example: humans (XX–XY system); also seen in Drosophila.
