Human sex determination is of the XY type. Since the mother contributes only an X chromosome (all her eggs are X), while the father can contribute either an X or a Y chromosome through his sperm, it is the father's gamete that decides whether the offspring is male (XY) or female (XX).

Analysing the statement:

  • Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes: 22 pairs of autosomes, and 1 pair of sex chromosomes. Females are homogametic (XX) — during meiosis, every egg (ovum) produced carries one X chromosome.
  • Males are heterogametic (XY) — during meiosis, sperm are of two kinds in equal proportion: 50% carry an X chromosome and 50% carry a Y chromosome.
  • At fertilisation, the egg (always X) fuses with either an X-bearing sperm or a Y-bearing sperm:
    • Egg (X) + X-bearing sperm → XX zygote → develops into a female child.
    • Egg (X) + Y-bearing sperm → XY zygote → develops into a male child. …
