In humans, sex is determined by the XY system: all eggs from the mother carry a single X chromosome, but sperm from the father carry either an X or a Y chromosome — so it is the type of sperm that fertilises the egg (contributed by the father) that fixes the sex of the child.

Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, of which 22 pairs are autosomes (same in both sexes) and one pair is the sex chromosome pair:

  • Females are XX (homogametic) — during oogenesis, meiosis produces eggs that ALL carry a single X chromosome.
  • Males are XY (heterogametic) — during spermatogenesis, meiosis produces two kinds of sperm in equal numbers: 50% carrying an X chromosome and 50% carrying a Y chromosome.

At fertilisation, the mother's contribution is always an X-bearing egg, so it cannot vary the outcome. It is the father's sperm that varies:

  • If an X-bearing sperm fertilises the egg → zygote is XX → daughter. …
