Homogametic means an individual has two IDENTICAL sex chromosomes (e.g. XX); of the four options, only the bird female has two DIFFERENT sex chromosomes (ZW), so she is the odd one out.

In most mammals and in Drosophila, males are heterogametic (XY) and females are homogametic (XX) -- both sex chromosomes in the female are alike.

  • Human female: XX -- homogametic.
  • Drosophila female: XX -- homogametic.
  • Bird male: ZZ -- homogametic (in birds, sex determination follows the ZW system, and it is the MALE that carries two identical Z chromosomes).

Birds (and butterflies, some fish and reptiles) use the ZW sex-determination system, the reverse of the mammalian pattern: the male is ZZ (homogametic) and the FEMALE is ZW (heterogametic), since she carries two different sex chromosomes.
