Humans have the XX–XY type of sex determination: the mother, being XX, produces only X-bearing eggs, while the father, being XY, produces two types of sperm (X-bearing and Y-bearing) in equal numbers — so the sex of the child depends on which type of sperm fertilises the egg, i.e., it is determined by the father.

In humans, sex is determined by the sex chromosomes: females are homogametic (XX) and males are heterogametic (XY). During oogenesis, every egg produced by the mother carries one X chromosome (since she has only X chromosomes) — so the mother contributes an X chromosome unconditionally, regardless of the sex of the offspring.

During spermatogenesis, however, the father produces two types of sperm in equal proportion: 50% carry an X chromosome and 50% carry a Y chromosome (a consequence of the XY pair segregating during meiosis).

At fertilisation:

  • If an X-bearing sperm fertilises the egg → zygote is XX → develops into a female child.
  • If a Y-bearing sperm fertilises the egg → zygote is XY → develops into a male child. …
