Let AA be the students who passed Accountancy and EE those who passed Economics, with n(A)=30n(A) = 30, n(E)=25n(E) = 25, n(A∩E)=20n(A \cap E) = 20, out of 4040 students.

Passed at least one:

n(A∪E)=n(A)+n(E)−n(A∩E)=30+25−20=35.n(A \cup E) = n(A) + n(E) - n(A \cap E) = 30 + 25 - 20 = 35.

Failed both = total minus those who passed at least one:

40−35=5.40 - 35 = 5. …
