Step 1. Bonding/hybridisation. Diamond: every carbon is sp3 hybridised, four single bonds to four neighbours (section 9.6.1). Graphite: every carbon is sp2 hybridised, three sigma bonds within a flat hexagonal sheet, with a delocalised pi system from the fourth, unhybridised p-electron.
