The geometric or point method measures price elasticity of demand at a particular point on a straight-line (linear) demand curve. If the demand curve is extended to meet both axes, then at any point P:
Elasticity = (Lower segment of the curve below P) / (Upper segment of the curve above P).
Consequences along one straight-line demand curve:
- Midpoint: lower = upper, so elasticity = 1 (unitary).
- Above the midpoint (nearer the price axis): lower > upper, so elasticity > 1 (elastic).
