The thymus is a lobed gland located near the heart and beneath the breastbone, well developed in the young and involuting with age. It secretes a group of peptide hormones collectively called thymosin. Thymosin plays a major role in the differentiation of T-lymphocytes, which provide cell-mediated immunity; in addition, it also promotes production of antibodies by other lymphocytes, thereby contributing to humoral immunity. This makes the thymus central to the maturation of the body's immune system, particularly during early life.
