Immunity that is 'acquired' arises after exposure to a specific antigen, and it is called 'active' when the individual's own immune system actively produces the antibodies (as opposed to 'passive' immunity, where ready-made antibodies are simply transferred from another source). When this active response is deliberately induced through medical intervention — by administering a vaccine containing an attenuated (weakened), killed, or inactivated form of a pathogen, or a harmless fragment of it (antigen) — it is termed artificial acquired active immunity.
