Q.Enlist the different factors that are responsible for changing gene frequency.
Gene frequency changes due to mutation, genetic recombination, gene flow, genetic drift, chromosomal aberrations, natural selection and non-random mating.
Step 1. Gene mutation is a sudden, permanent, heritable change within a gene that alters the gene pool.
Step 2. Genetic recombination (crossing over) during gamete formation produces new allele combinations, changing gene frequencies in the resulting offspring.
Step 3. Gene flow — the movement of genes into or out of a population through migration, pollen dispersal or DNA transfer — directly alters allele frequency.
Step 4. Genetic drift causes random, chance-driven changes in allele frequency, especially in small populations, including the founder effect and bottleneck effect.
Step 5. Chromosomal aberrations (deletion, duplication, inversion, translocation) change the arrangement and number of genes present.
Step 6. Natural selection changes gene frequency by favouring the differential reproduction of individuals carrying certain genes, and non-random mating changes which genotypes actually combine, both of which disturb the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.
Mutation, genetic recombination (crossing over), gene flow (migration), genetic drift, chromosomal aberrations, natural selection, and non-random mating.
