Step 2. XeF2: Xe + F2, sealed in a nickel tube at 400 degrees C, gives XeF2 -- the lowest F2 ratio and mildest conditions of the three.
Step 3. XeF4: Xe + F2 in a 1:5 molar ratio, in a nickel tube at 400 degrees C and 5-6 atm pressure, gives XeF4; alternatively, Xe + 2F2 under electric discharge at -80 degrees C also gives XeF4 -- showing that either higher pressure/higher fluorine ratio, or an electric-discharge activation route, can reach this intermediate fluoride. …
