A sol is a dispersion of colloidal particles (solid particles with diameters of 1-100 nm) in a liquid. A gel is an interconnected rigid network with pores of submicrometre dimensions and polymeric chains whose average length exceeds a micrometre.
Step 2. State the reaction basis. The sol-gel process is based on inorganic polymerisation reactions, generally carried out at room temperature.
Step 3. Give the two key reactions. Hydrolysis: MOR + H2O -> MOH + ROH (a metal alkoxide reacts with water). Condensation: MOH + ROM -> M-O-M + ROH (two hydroxylated metal centres link up, releasing alcohol and building the oxide network). …
