Miscellaneous Exercise 2(B) II · Q100

Q.The sum of three numbers is 2. If twice the second number is added to the sum of first and third number, we get o adding five times the first number to the sum of second and third we get 6. Find the three numbers by using matrices. (The source textbook prints this sentence with a missing value/clause between "we get" and "adding five times" -- transcribed exactly as printed; see the note in the answer.)

Step 1: The printed sentence reads: "The sum of three numbers is 2. If twice the second number is added to the sum of first and third number, we get o adding five times the first number to the sum of second and third we get 6." This was checked directly against a fresh high-resolution render of the actual printed textbook page (not merely the extracted text layer), and the defect is confirmed to be in the SOURCE PRINTING itself: there is a missing value/clause between "we get" and "adding five times" -- almost certainly a dropped "[value]. On" (i.e. the second condition's result value, and the start of the third sentence, both appear to have been lost in typesetting).

Step 2: What CAN be extracted with confidence: "the sum of three numbers is 2" gives x+y+z=2x+y+z=2; "five times the first number added to the sum of second and third we get 6" gives 5x+(y+z)=65x+(y+z)=6, i.e. 5x+y+z=65x+y+z=6.

Step 3: The middle condition -- "twice the second number added to the sum of first and third" gives the EXPRESSION (x+z)+2y(x+z)+2y, i.e. x+2y+zx+2y+z -- but the value this expression equals is exactly the missing piece of text, so no third equation can be honestly written down. …
