Both ends being antinodes permits every integer number of half-wavelengths to fit, giving all harmonics.

For an air column in a pipe open at both ends, both ends must be displacement antinodes. The simplest standing-wave patterns that satisfy this have nn half-wavelengths fitting the pipe length LL, for any positive integer nn:

L=nλn2  ⟹  λn=2LnL = \frac{n\lambda_n}{2} \implies \lambda_n = \frac{2L}{n}

fn=vλn=nv2L=nf1,n=1,2,3,4,…f_n = \frac{v}{\lambda_n} = \frac{nv}{2L} = n f_1,\quad n = 1,2,3,4,\ldots …
