Each replacement leaves a fraction (1−440)=910\left(1-\tfrac{4}{40}\right)=\tfrac{9}{10} of the milk; after 33 operations the milk is 40(910)3=29.1640\left(\tfrac{9}{10}\right)^3=29.16 litres.

Successive replacement rule: if a container holds VV litres of pure liquid and xx litres are drawn out and replaced by water nn times, the liquid left is

V(1−xV)n.V\left(1-\frac{x}{V}\right)^{n}.

Here V=40V=40 L, x=4x=4 L, n=3n=3 (the original draw + two more repetitions).

  1. Fraction of milk retained per operation: 1−xV=1−440=3640=9101-\dfrac{x}{V}=1-\dfrac{4}{40}=\dfrac{36}{40}=\dfrac{9}{10}.
  2. Number of operations: the process is done once and "repeated further two more times", so n=3n=3.
  3. Apply the formula: …
